The first Super Bowl took place in 1967 and wasn’t actually called the Super Bowl it was called the NFL-AFL world championship, and since there were only a few television stations at the time nearly all American Households tuned in to watch the “Big Game” and immediately an advertising opportunity was born.
During the game that First year a 30 second commercial cost $47,000 ($298,000 adjusted for inflation) but jump forward to today and that same 30 second commercial would cost over 100x as much at $5 million.
It is important to note that the population of the United States has grown over the last 50 years and the number of televisions have exponentially grown which means the first superbowl had 51 million viewers and the most recent super bowl had roughly 103 million. Which means that the cost went from fractions of pennies to about 5 cents per viewer today.

Quick note on why we’re using patreon. While I would be lying to say that I didn’t want this podcast to become a primary income for the three of us, when not in the Fandomverse I try to live in reality. Patreon is a way (for the most part) that we can be in touch with the people who really listen and care. Podcast Reviews can be faked, downloads can be purchased, twitter and facebook can be manipulated but seeing you guys put your support behind a few of your fellow geeks is inspiring, and it’s really neat getting to know you as we interact.
If you’re listening and have been thinking about pledging but aren’t quite sure if you want to, reach out to us, and ask a question, fandom related or not we will answer it. We are on Facebook, Twitter and email.
